New Music Review: RED - Until We Have Faces

There is something truly unique and special about a RED album that is hard to describe. It isn’t just that they make music; it’s something more than that, almost as if they made an entire movie and then compressed it and into pure sound injections for your brain’s “viewing pleasure”. There are three things I have come to expect from a RED album. Firstly, an epic intro track; “End of Silence” had one, and so did the Deluxe Edition of Innocence and Instinct (sadly, the standard edition did not). Second, one of the album singles will have an alternate version track; “Already Over” and A.O. Pt 2, “Fight Inside” and “Nothing and Everything” (I&I D.E. again, but not standard). Lastly, a perfect blend of gentleness and rage that doesn’t in any way overpower one side or the other. “Until We Have Faces” does not have an intro track (but does have an outro if you pre-ordered from iTunes). It also lacks the alternate version of the single (hopefully to be released if a deluxe edition is created). On the third count, RED has hit perfection. This album has me re-evaluating my standard view of a RED album. While the first two items are desirable for the sake of sound, U.W.H.F. proves that they are unneeded to create a perfect album. “Feed the Machine" is more intro than any album could ask for with powerful vocal and instrumental highs and lows, and the power just keeps coming, even in the slower tracks, up to the end of “Hymn for the Missing”. There is no such thing as “two steps back” for this band. They continually amaze me with each new release. For a Christian rock band who have only been around 7 years (perfect number irony), RED have done unbelievably well for themselves, earning tour slots with some of the biggest names in modern rock, and achieving radio play on several mainstream stations. I fully expect to see them get even bigger in the coming years and believe they are going to be a band to set standards by. Thank you once again RED for giving us a spectacular album.
