Tip Fourteen: Sampling

Especially in the rap industry, sampling is  a helpful tool to get an already established sound you like into your song and then play around with new uses. For example, Eminem's use of "Dream On" by Aerosmith was very clever and gained a lot of attention. At the same time though, be careful and make sure you have all of the proper legal rights or your entire song is worthless and will be considered copyright infringement, something you don't want on your musical "record". If you like a sound the safest way to use it is to re-create it with your own instruments so that it won't be assumed theft. Again though, if you're planning on covering a song, always get permission first.
