Tip Eight: Everything Changes

"Change is inevitable - except from a vending machine." ~ Robert C. Gallagher

As already stated in "Tip Four", the industry will try to change you, for better or worse. It is important to note that there is a difference between changing and evolving. To change your sound completely just because you are told by the record company that it will sell better is wrong. However, evolving or maturing is natural. You are almost guaranteed to change some over time, if you don't, you will probably become repetative and lose fans. Your true fans should be willing to stick it out and see where you go with it. After all, the more time you spend doing music, the more new techniques you will learn and you may discover a new sound you previously were unable to achieve. The most recent example that comes to mind is that of Linkin Park. Back in 2000, LP had a fairly distinct sound which made "Hybrid Theory" one of the best sellers of the last decade, second only to the Beatles' "1". Ten years later, they are about to release their fourth official studio album which has been stated to contain "genre-busting" tracks, and of course, more changes. With every album released they have made minor changes to their sound without losing fans, because most people understand that the band is still evolving and finding out who they really are.
